For the past 27 years artist K.Krishnan Nair has a dream: to create on canvass a landscape using coloured sand .  Unfortunately he is yet to come across blue and green sands that can complete his requirements.

Why did he choose this unusual medium for the expression of his talent? 28 years ago he was a drawing teacher at a school at Thiruvallam, Thiruvananthapuram.  One evening, after teaching children how to mix colours, he was returning from school along the bank of the local river when the magical moment occurred.

The evening sun had spread out a spectrum of colours on the sand by the bank.  As the spellbound artist took a closer look he saw the different coloured sand grains lying in layers.  An immediate instinct prompted him to gather those different coloured sand grains in his hands.

From then onwards natural sand grains have been his colours.  He has so far completed 62 works using different coloured sands.  These include Ganapathi, Rajastani lady, An Evening in the Village, Raveendra Nath Tagore, Mother Teresa, Matha Amrithananda Mayi, Sree Narayana Guru etc.

He applies glue on the canvass and then spreads the sand grains to complete the picture.  His black and white work of Chithira Tirunal Maha Raja has been done with sand collected from sacred spots like Thiruvallam, Rameswaram, Varkala and Kanyakumari.

“An act that requires the utmost concentration”, he says about his work.  “At least one week is required to complete a work,” says this teacher of Manacaud Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram.
