To army captain Gopinath, who suffered spinal injury in an automobile accident at Delhi, and who had rose up to the challenge by canalizing his energy to building a business sitting in his wheelchair, came the idea of doing something to the poor patients who suffer from such tragedies.

With the active support of the Dr.C.K.N.Panikkar, Orthopaedic doctor at Cooperative Hospital, Kozhikkode and Father Thaipparambil, a social activist, he took the initiative to found ‘ASPIRE’ (Association for Spinal Injury Rehabilitation) in 1998.  The awareness that existing hospitals and organizations are not doing what they ought to, gave impetus to the start of ‘Aspire’.

The organization has been provided office space and 4 beds at Cooperative Hospital, Eranhippalam.  Aspire provides the present 4 patients training in umbrella making, soap making, screen printing, electronic board assembly, CFL board making etc.  While charges towards their treatment is born by ‘Aspire’, another voluntary organization, ‘Message’, has sponsored the lunch for the 4.  In addition, the staff of the hospital are always ready to help them.

Thus, the young men who had lived a life of loneliness and neglect for 8 or even 10 years after their spinal injury, have found reason to aspire to greater independence, thanks to the efforts of ‘Aspire’.
