The young boys did the rescue act without any doubt or hesitation.  The 5th standard student Hrishikesh and 7th standard student Vijesh Menon knew what had to be done when their friend Sajan Thomas of Vivekananda Public School, Thiruvanchiyoor, Kottayam, was bitten by a snake.

Sajan unwittingly let his finger within reach of the fangs of the reptile when he tried to pick up the coins that slipped out of his hand and fell into the undergrowth in a rubber plantation.  The coins had been given by his mother for buying an inland letter card.

As Sajan ran from the rubber plantation to a nearby shop, his classmate Hrishikesh, who came that way that very instant, did not think twice before sucking the blood out of the wound in Sajan’s finger.  Vijesh who reached the scene after Hrishikesh, did the next best thing by tying a rubber around the arm of the victim.

It was later that the local people and the teachers took Sajan to the hospital.  And it was still later that they knew that the first aid was already given by 2 young lads of the same school.

And when the Principal Sarasamma called them to the stage during the Children’s Day Celebrations, the entire students applauded the act of bravery and presence of mind shown by the duo.
