Twin sister Athira’s presence of mind saved Adarsh from drowning in the well where he fell.  11-year-old Athira is the daughter of Radhika, Radhika Mandiram, Thottakkadu, Thiruvananthapuram and a 6th standard student of P.T.M.U.P.School, Thencherikkonam.

In the evening when Adarsh went out to fetch water to keep in the ‘kindi’, only his bedridden grandparents were at home.  Their mother, a telephone booth employee, was away from home.

Adarsh slipped and fell into the well, but caught hold of the rope as soon as he came to the surface of water.  At the same time, Athira caught hold of the other end of the rope and started pulling.  The brother slipped on the earthen ring of the well and fell into the water again.  Though the tension in the rope was hurting her tender hands, Athira didn’t let go of the rope and tied it around a stone.

And slowly Adarsh climbed out of the well using the rope.
