VINAYKUMAR AND INDIRA: COUPLE MANUFACTURING WHEAT BRAN-BASED CUTLERY

Vinaykumar, an insurance man from the Gulf, came across biodegradable plates at a party in Dubai.  Impressed by the product’s eco-friendly tang and its business potential, he contacted its manufacturer, a Polish company, with a proposal for expanding their products in India.  But the foreign firm was apparently not interested.

Soon Vinaykumar resigned his job, came back to India and contacted R&D enterprises in India to develop a commercial product of similar nature.  And after 3 years of research, he was able to arrive at a product made of wheat bran that was leak proof, microvave-friendly, disposable as cattle/fish feed or firewood or even as kitchen waste.

So Vinaykumar, ex-insurance man, together with his wife Indira, an ex-banker, formed VIR which operates from Angamali, Ernakulam. Daily about 1000 plates are manufactured in sterile environment using machinery.  The customers are mainly those who wouldn’t mind spending a little more as part of ecological responsibility.  These include event management groups that arrange weddings and parties. Entities like Club Mahindra are also among their clientale. Of late, even thattukadas or wayside eateries have also shown interest in the product since washing traditional plates is a hassle for such microenterprises.

Another product manufactured by VIR is straw made of rice flour.  They have plans to expand the products to include cutlery like spoon, knife and fork soon.

Unlike the Polish company, who were reluctant to share their product details, VIR is ready to share it with anyone in the world.  Already some firms from UK, Russia and Nigeria have approached them for tie-ups.
